The Development of Turning Point Studios Pilates
Turning
Point Studios Pilates reflects and incorporates several different
Pilates lineages into the exercises shown in this manual.
Our training in Pilates began in 1988 at the Dancemedicine
division of the Center for Sports Medicine at Saint Francis
Memorial Hospital in San Francisco
, California
. At that time there were very few
Pilates teacher training courses and most teachers learned
as apprentices to senior teachers. The instructors at the
Hospital were originally trained by the Ron Fletcher Studio
in Los Angeles ,
California .
Our training in the traditional repertoire continued with
workshops from Eve Gentry, Romana Kryzanowska, Carola Trier,
Michele Larsson and Alan Herdman. Nora St. John and Naomi
Leiserson completed their teacher training with Michele Larsson
through Core Dynamics in Santa Fe
, New
Mexico after they had been teaching
for many years.
The
Center for Sports Medicine was one of the first clinics to
incorporate Pilates into a clinical setting which lead to
the development of adaptations of the traditional work to
suit clients with neuromuscular injuries. Through working
closely with doctors, physical therapists, Feldenkrais practitioners,
Laban/Bartenieff teachers and other somatic modalities we
incorporated contemporary concepts from somatics, kinesiology
and exercise science into our work with clients. This background
has led us to approach Pilates as a gateway to assist our
clients in learning to move with comfort, efficiency and grace.
